Northern Lights Hunt by Car, Levi — Up to 50 km from the Resort, Open Sky, Experienced Local Driver

Why This Is One of the Best Ways to Hunt the Northern Lights from Levi

  • Up to 50 km from Levi — out of the village's light pollution, into open terrain with an unobstructed northern horizon
  • Experienced local driver who reads real-time sky and weather conditions — not just the forecast
  • Route adjusted on the night based on cloud cover, wind direction and sky visibility
  • Comfortable minivan or minibus — warm between stops, easy to move quickly when conditions change
  • Available Oct 1 – Apr 15 — the full northern lights season

Levi village has light pollution. Not much, but enough. This tour takes you out of it — up to 50 km from the centre — with a driver who knows where the sky opens up and where the conditions are best on any given night.

Reading the Sky — How Local Arctic Weather Knowledge Finds the Northern Lights

Cloudy skies do not automatically rule out a sighting. Cloud layers vary in thickness, and wind can shift the cover quickly. On many evenings that look overcast from the village, gaps open up at the right moment in the right direction. This is what local knowledge is for. The driver has seen enough Lapland nights to read the sky, not just the forecast.

That said, the northern lights cannot be guaranteed on any tour, anywhere in Lapland. What this tour offers is a better position and a driver who knows how to find it.

How the Aurora Hunt Works — Pickup, Route and Stops

  • Pickup from your accommodation in Levi — the driver comes to you
  • The vehicle heads out of the village into open terrain, making stops at the best viewing spots on the night
  • During a stopover, warm berry juice and gingerbread cookies are served
  • The tour returns to Levi after approximately two hours

        F.A.Q.

        • Can the northern lights be guaranteed on this tour?

No — northern lights cannot be guaranteed anywhere in Lapland. What this tour offers is a significantly better position than staying in the village, with a driver who adjusts the route in real time based on sky conditions and local knowledge.

        • What happens if the sky is completely cloudy?

The tour runs regardless of weather. Cloud cover varies in thickness and can shift quickly — the driver will seek out gaps and the best conditions available on the night. On many evenings that look overcast from Levi, sightings happen further out. If conditions make a sighting impossible, the tour still runs for the full two hours.

        • How far from Levi does the tour go?

Up to 50 km from Levi centre, depending on where conditions are best on the night. The exact destination is not fixed in advance — the driver reads real-time conditions and heads for the best available sky.

        • Is this suitable for young children?

Yes. All ages are welcome. The vehicle is warm and comfortable between stops. Stops involve standing outside in cold conditions, so warm clothing is essential for all ages.

        • What is the difference between this tour and the snowmobile northern lights safaris?

This tour covers a much larger area — up to 50 km from Levi — in a warm, comfortable vehicle. The snowmobile safaris cover shorter distances on trails and stop at fixed or semi-fixed locations. This tour is better for covering ground quickly when conditions are changing; the snowmobile safaris offer a more active experience closer to the village.
